Hommages & fakes pt.3

The art interns at Disney TV were recently given an assignment to design a 'royal family' in the style of Ronald Searle.

Teacher and artist Bobby Pontillas created two very Searle-esque renditions of the 'royal families' from 'Game of Thrones'. These look amazingly like real ink pieces but are, in fact, created with digital 'brushes'. Read how Bobby achieved the Searle line over on his Tumblr

Tribute

Cartoonist Nick Galifiniakis is a huge Searle fan and created this fantastic tribute to his friend Richard Thompson and all the great cartoonists who came before him. He explains the piece thus:

Less than a year ago, I created this drawing as a tribute to my now shaved-head, brain-electrodes implanted pal, Richard Thompson, a genius who can now also jump-start my car.

The piece was for the very worthy book by Chris Sparks, "Team Cul de Sac." Proceeds go to fight Parkinson's.

The concept (abbreviated so I don't bore you) is simple: the greatest cartoonist that ever lived, Ronald Searle, surrounded by a pantheon of great illustrators, is anointing his heir, Richard Thompson.

If you don't see your favorite cartoonist up there, don't worry, he or she is represented by the anonymous cherub touching Searle's shoulder.

(Strange, sad, side note: Ronald Searle passed away a month after I made this picture. My heart is still broken and daily I tell myself that, cosmically, I had nothing to do with accelerating the death my 92 year old hero)

A beautiful tribute I'm sure you'll agree. Richard Thompson is an accomplished cartoonist and creator of the popular Cul de Sac strip-he is bravely battling Parkinson's Disease- see his blog post on drawing while being operated on-you can't keep a good cartoonist down!

Call for entries

I've recently had some very interesting contributions from readers and in the wake of Mr Searle's death the site has seen increased traffic which may throw up more rarities. Contributions are always welcome so if anyone out there has any rare Searle-iana that they think would add to this site please contact me at the email address in my Blogger profile. The Private Collections section has contributions from several readers already.

Before Christmas Yak El-Droubie contacted me with some terrific shots taken by Douglas Webb during the production of Wendy Toye's 'The King's Breakfast'. I've added them to the 'King's Breakfast' section

Nicholas S. sent in a very lovely example of early Searle, circa 1947, originally made for an autograph hunter. It shows the artist portrayed by one of his darling schoolgirl creations.

In this drawing from the fifties the artist gets his own back on his diabolical creations.

Hommage pt.2

Ken Turner made a series of interpretations of characters from BATMAN in Searle's style

Last year artists at Dreamworks Animation ran a 'Searle' character design class. The assignment was to draw characters from Flash Gordon or Conan in the style of Searle.
