TAKE ONE TOAD

TAKE ONE TOAD is a large format book of 'ancient remedies'. It is notable for its full colour, double page, painted images. Searle is generally known for his masterful, monotone pen & ink drawings so it's always a delight to find colour illustrations by him. The book is embellished with 10 pages of colour illustrations & more than 20 in black & white.
This volume was first published in 1968.

Haha! Are there any captions for the illustrations? It's fun to figure out what exactly is going on in them, however I wonder if there are notes in the original book to suppport the pictures...?

For instance, the one in which the fellow seems to be explaining that he's got a sore throat, then ends up getting hanged... That will cure the sore throat for sure!

Searle's colours are sublime. The subtle use of pattern on draperies and such adds dimension.
