Italia

An interesting oddity from Italy with a great self portrait I hadn't seen before. I don't know much more about this publication.

Smörgåsbord

The 1964 book 'Escape from the Amazon!' collects drawings from the 'By Rocking Chair Across . . . ' series that was published in Punch and Holiday magazines. The book contains articles written by Alex Atkinson on Spain, Sweden and France plus a story on 'The Adventures of Mrs. Dyson'. Here are the drawings from the Sweden section. I've traced some of the originals and the rest are scans from the book.

A Phoenix Too Frequent

A beautiful edition of Christopher Fry's story illustrated by Searle in 1959 in a more classical style than usual.  He would do complimentary drawings the next year for Robert Grave's 'The Anger of Achilles' 1960

An Evening at the Larches

Searle produced a ghoulish series of illustrations to accompany Harry Hearson and J. C. Trewin's 'An Evening at the Larches' published in 1951.  As a special Halloween treat here are shots of the original artwork.
