Searle produced a ghoulish series of illustrations to accompany Harry Hearson and J. C. Trewin's 'An Evening at the Larches' published in 1951. As a special Halloween treat here are shots of the original artwork.

Hell yeah!
I thought you'd like it!
More then like! Its my favorite period. I thought I had everyone I really wanted too.
I haven't looked at the archive but have you posted THE CONSTANT MOON book?
Great Post Matt! I never knew about these. Feels more like an early Christmas gift! Oliver: "More please?"
Cheers
Are these from the collection in Hanover? Terrific!
Hey, you're welcome Jeff-thanks for the feedback. Yes Uli, these were shots taken in Hanover-probably towards the end of the day as we were flagging from Searle fatigue- hence the fuzzy, out of focus shots!
Drazen- I have the Inconstant Moon cover in the Book Covers section I think- do you have better scans? Are there interior illos?
oops yeah INCONSTANT MOOn:-).. yes there are interiors, really cool too, less exaggerated with a wash. The way mine is it would take a beating if I flattened it out for scans (and I'm usually not to precious) but I'll try taking photos and see if they come out good enough to send. My copy is signed by the author Noel Langley who was a screenwriter on THE WIZARD OF OF OZ as well so thats kind of neato:-)
I don't have the dust jacket but the boards are really nice so if its different then the cover I'll scan that.
OK thanks Drazen- photos are good-I'll see if I can track down a copy for myself- never knew if it was worth it. Interesting Langley/Oz info.
Is Searle's work available for admirers to view in Hanover? I visited for the 'What, Already?!' exhibition but I'd like another immersion please!
About 20 interiors with about 15 of them being small, but some of them really amazing its too bad they aren't bigger. I think its a little different from most of his other work.
This is my
FAVORITE
HALLOWEEN
treat
this year!
THANX!
Thanks so much for posting such great images of 'An Evening at the Larches'. I adore the cover of that book, but I hadn't ever seen the other illustrations.
